Audio/Music Mastering

Mastering is the process that prepares your music (final stereo mix) for manufacturing (CD replication). The CD manufacturers (CD brokers) make an exact duplicate of your stereo mix and don’t alter the sound. The mastering engineer enhances your sound and brings the levels (db) up to commercially released CD standards. He/she has experience, talent, technical skills, and a very good ear.

Our professional mastering engineers have over 20 years experience as engineer, producer, musician, composer, and singer. We can listen to your songs with a fresh new view. Not only do we have the technical skills to enhance your music, but we can hear your songs from a musicians or vocalist perspective without compromising the quality of the end product.

The most common mastering procedures are EQ, limiting, compressing, level correction, song order and spacing, spacialization, phase correction, and cleaning heads and tails. We can even make your digital master sound warmer by analog modeling processing (vintage, classic, tube, or contemporary).

It’s amazing what can be done at a mastering session. We can change the key, tempo, or length of your song in real time. We can correct out of tune vocals and instruments if you provide us with an acappella or solo mix. The corrected solo track is then inserted into the instrumental stereo mix during mastering. If you’re unhappy with a fade, it can be redone easier during mastering rather than redoing the entire stereo mix.

It’s almost impossible to determine how much time it will take for mastering a project. The cost varies depending on each project’s requirements.

Remember, mastering does a great job of taking out flaws, but some final stereo mixes have distortions and other problems embedded in the sound wave that can’t be fixed, just made less noticeable. Our mastering work is guaranteed! If an error was made by us, we will correct it at no charge, but if you want changes made after you’ve approved the master CD (different edits, louder bass, song order revised, etc.) you’ll be charged for the extra time.

Pre – Mastering Checklist

  • Don’t normalize or dither,
  • Don’t use finalizing, limiting, or compression on the stereo master out at mixdown. By doing so, it gives the engineer less options to enhance your sound and it can’t be redone.
  • Make a backup of your stereo mix.
  • Include the name, ID number, and time location of each song.
  • If using DAT tapes, leave 30 – 60 seconds at the head and tail.
  • Songs can be processed in any order, it’s best to determine the order of your songs before the mastering session begins. You can always change your mind before the final master is completed.
  • Write a description of what you think needs to be done to each song.
  • We have no problem if you provide us with a commercially released CD as an example of how you want your master to sound.
